What causes frizzy hair and how do you control it? According to Dr. Jacob, a dermatologist, "your hair's outer layer, the cuticle, under magnification looks very much like shingled roof. When hair is smooth, those 'shingles' lie flat, but when you run a brush through dry, curly hair, those 'shingles' lift." There are a few ways to help keep your hair soft, smooth, and silky even when it's in a frizzed-out state. Below are a few tips that you can implement to keep your hair thick, healthy, and beautiful.
Consider a Heat-Free Routine. Applying heat to your hair is both damaging and drying and the primary reason your hair is frizzy. It's very common for women to blow-dry their hair after the shower and then to use a flat iron or curling iron to style it. Daily heat not only dries out your hair but also causes hair color to wear away faster. Additionally, heat damages the integrity of your hair follicles, which often leads to breakage. If you absolutely must use heat, protect your hair before and after. Make it a habit to look at the ingredients found in your hair products. Many hair products have remarkably high alcohol content. Alcohol dries out your hair. When alcohol is mixed with heat, the drying effect is even more severe. Moroccan Oil is a great, oil free product that will help your hair through the heat. Only use a small dab of Moroccan Oil since it is very dense and could cause your hair to be overly oily.
Routine TLC Helps. Your hair needs consistent tender, loving care. However, washing it every day is not the kind of TLC we're talking about. Actually you should avoid washing your hair every day. Instead, wash it every other day or even every three days. "The natural oils that accumulate are good frizz fighters," says Diane Puccio, manager of MHN Hair Studio. If you're concerned about the roots appearing oily, purchase a dry shampoo and use it on the days between washing. She recommends doing a weekly hot oil treatment, applying the oil to the middle and ends of your locks to moisturize the parts that may have become overly dry. The roots of your hair have natural oils, so don't worry about applying the oil treatment to the crown of your head.
Stop allowing your hairstyle to decide whether or not you feel fabulous each day. Unlike many other parts of life that are beyond our control, frizzy hair is one thing we can control. It only takes a few minutes of planning each day and week to keep your hair looking its best.
Don't walk around with crispy, frizzed locks if you can help it. Start a weekly routine that includes deep conditioning, lay off the heat and don't over process your hair with color or perms. If this does not work, consider getting hair extensions - it's an automatic fix for frizz.
